Haere ra Raven

Raven heads off to live in Australia on Monday.
This week to bid him 'farewell' we had a shared lunch picnic & games at Petone Rec.

Yesterday Miss Heatley presented him with his Year 8 leavers bible & candle.

Good luck in Sydney Raven :-)

Year 8's Legacy Working Bee

At the end of each year the Year 8's work on a 'Legacy Item'.
This year a 'Memory Garden' is being constructed.
The first sods of earth were turned yesterday and 12 of the Year 8's came along to a Working Bee in the evening to get the construction started.
There were bursts of work interspersed by bursts of socialising/play!
With Fish & Chips to finish.
The garden will keep evolving over the next couple of weeks...

Harakeke WOW Garments...

On Friday 24 October Pep & Ros visited all 3 Senior Syndicate Classes - sharing their Harakeke Wearable Art.
They had designed and made these garments as part of their Harakeke Weaving Course at the Wananga in Porirua.

We heard about the design process, special dyes they used, some techniques and how it can take a long time to make a garment!

They were both inspired by Maori Myths & Legends

We found it very inspiring :-)

Some good advice they gave us was:
don't worry about making mistakes- you can sometimes turn your mistakes into something!!
And-
If you use lots of natural materials it's free & you can use them in lots of different ways.

Thanks Pep & Ros we didn't know you could do so much with Harakeke!
