Technology

At the start of each term the Kākāpō students go to Hutt Intermediate for Technology.
Here is an outline of each different subject that the students will cover this year:

ICT TECHNOLOGY

Year 7 = ANIMATION. This is an introduction to Apple Mac Computers and drawing animation. This is a visual language unit. Students will design their own animated movie using storyboards and then progress to drawing on the computer (stop-frame animation) using a photo background. Students will make their own soundtrack and add this to their finished movie in Quicktime Format.  This unit covers an introduction to I Can Animate, Garageband, iMovie and Quicktime.
Year 8.The focus for Year 8’s is on increasing technical knowledge and skill building, allowing what is learnt in ICT technology to be transferred to the students own school, website, wiki or blog. This unit also provides tips and hints so the student can be competent throughout the year when needing to source programmes or information. The student will work on creating Voki’s (Animated Avatars), identifying quality websites, computer programming (Scatch), Garageband and Incredibox (music), Numbers (spreadsheets) and Keynote (interactive presentations).

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Year 7 = READY STEADY COOK - Students prepare a range of dishes including Mexican food, frittata, ANZAC biscuits and an afternoon tea.  This helps to develop their skills and knowledge of technological processes and practices.  They then follow the design and make process to develop a pizza for a given stakeholder/friend.

Year 8 = This program is still under development but will focus on the technology process of creating products/dishes to meet set criteria.  Students will create a range of dishes from around the world and the design and planning process will be looked at in depth.

FABRIC TECHNOLOGY

Year 7 = SUPER SCARVES. This is an introduction to machine sewing project. Students design and make a polar fleece scarf that reflects their personality. This involves exploring visual language (the meaning of cultural symbols and colours) to help the students decide what they would like their scarf to look like. To construct their scarf, the students learn sewing skills such as how to use a sewing machine safely, how to set up a sewing machine and adjust settings and how to sew basic seams. More confident or advanced students will also learn how to decorate their scarves using simple applique.

Year 8 = BAGS OF STYLE. This is a follow-on machine sewing programme. Students design and make a draw-string backpack. As part of this, they test a range of possible fabrics to help them decide what to make their bag out of.  To construct their bags, the students recap (from year 7) how to set up a sewing machine and adjust settings, how to read and understand basic dressmaking pattern symbols, how to sew zigzag finished 1.5cm seams and how to mark and stitch rolled hems. They also learn how to use iron-on transfers as a method of fabric decoration.

HARD MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

Year 7 = students will work through a series of lessons which will include the Design Process, practical skill building, working with a variety of materials and equipment. Each student will design and make plastic pendants. Students will learn to mark out and fold up a pencil case out of a sheet of metal ( 2D-3D ). If time allows they will then design and make a personalized door hanger.
Year 8 = students will be making a moving toy, based on a crank mechanism. They will be studying and following the steps of the Design Process to plan and make the toy’s theme e.g. horse jumping a fence or a rocket traveling in space.
